Latosha Portillo, Student Midwife & Birth Assistant

Latosha Portillo is a midwife in training at the Association of Texas Midwives. Her hope is to be a caring professional midwife that serves her local community in Minnesota. She knew from an early age that she wanted to help people. Latosha felt called to the medical field and also teaching. She loved working with children but after having her own 2 children (in 2019 and 2022) and experiencing modern women’s health and pregnancy care; she became aware of and interested in a more holistic care for women during and after pregnancy. Latosha is currently working at Roots Community Birth Center as a birth assistant in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Latosha has had 2 children and both were hospital births. Her first was a c-section and then for her second she had another hospital birth, but this time a vbac. In both experiences, Latosha felt that care was lacking in both attentiveness, encouragement, education, and resources. She felt that the medical system in her area was tough to navigate, especially for those who want to go a natural route.

In 2012 Latosha became an elementary teacher and received her Masters in Urban Education from USF in 2017. Working with children was a rewarding experience, but after having 2 of her own children she decided to stay home for a while. Latosha ended up helping the local community in opening up her home to a few other kids and started her own home day care in Southern California. After her late husband, Edward Portillo, passed away in 2024, she moved to Minnesota to be closer to her best friend and fellow ATM student midwife.

Now living in Andover, MN, Latosha’s hope and goal is to serve her community and the surrounding Metro areas as a midwife. While at home Latosha enjoys homeschooling her daughters, gardening, raising chickens, and learning new skills such as: knitting, sewing, baking, and pottery.
