Newborn Care

Minneapolis Newborn Care

Bringing a new baby into the world is a profound journey, and the care you receive after birth is just as important as the support you had during pregnancy. Comprehensive newborn care ensures both you and your baby are healthy, supported and comfortable. At Twin Cities Midwifery, we provide personalized, family-centered care from the moment your baby arrives, creating a nurturing environment for your growing family.

Our approach is rooted in the belief that birthing parents and babies belong together. From the moment of birth, all newborn evaluations and procedures are done with your baby in your arms or right beside you. We prioritize this special time by waiting until after the first latch to perform any standard procedures, ensuring a peaceful start to your new life together.

Essential Newborn Procedures

We believe in shared decision-making and informed consent. During your prenatal visits, we will discuss all standard newborn procedures in detail, giving you plenty of time to consider which options are right for your baby. Your choices guide your care plan and you can decline newborn procedures as desired.

While not required, we offer standard newborn procedures when indicated:

  • Head-to-toe newborn exam: Your baby will receive a thorough physical assessment from head to toe to ensure that every aspect of a routine newborn exam health is carefully evaluated and supported from the very beginning.
  • Vitamin K: We offer vitamin K, either by injection or oral drops, to help your newborn’s blood clot normally and prevent rare but serious bleeding disorders during those crucial early days.
  • Erythromycin eye ointment: If requested, we can apply erythromycin ointment to your baby’s eyes. This ointment helps protect your baby from potential infections that can be passed during birth, supporting their comfort and vision.
  • Newborn metabolic screening: We offer collecting a small blood sample from your baby, usually from the heel, to screen for a range of rare but serious metabolic disorders that benefit from early detection and treatment.
  • Hearing screening: A non-invasive hearing screening can be performed to identify early signs of hearing challenges, so your baby can receive timely support and follow-up care if indicated.
  • Critical congenital heart disease screening: We offer a painless pulse oximetry test to monitor your baby’s oxygen levels, helping detect certain heart conditions early and ensuring prompt follow-up care if anything unusual is found.

Nurturing Postpartum Support

The first few weeks with a new baby can be a significant transition. Our postpartum care is designed to support your entire family through this adjustment period. We provide a series of home visits to check on your physical and emotional well-being, offer feeding support and monitor your baby’s health.
