Minneapolis Home Births
At Twin Cities Midwifery, we understand that choosing where to give birth is one of the most important decisions you’ll make during pregnancy. Homebirth offers families the opportunity to welcome their newborn in the comfort and familiarity of their own space. Families often choose home birth because it offers a personalized, empowering experience that respects and celebrates their unique values and choices. Our compassionate team provides comprehensive support to help families with low-risk pregnancies experience safe, natural births in their own homes, surrounded by the people they love most.
What to Expect During Your Home Birth Journey
Comprehensive Prenatal Care
Your home birth experience begins with thorough prenatal care, including hour-long visits that allow time for physical evaluation, emotional support and relationship building. We offer the option of all routine lab testing and ultrasounds over the course of prenatal care, plus education about pregnancy, birth and postpartum recovery.
Labor and Birth Support
During labor, your midwives provide continuous support while respecting your body’s natural process. You have the freedom to labor in any position, use water immersion if desired and follow your instincts about movement, eating and drinking. Your care team monitors both you and your baby’s well-being while maintaining a calm, supportive environment.
Postpartum and Newborn Care
After birth, you’ll rest and recover in the comfort of your own bed while your midwife ensures both you and your baby are transitioning well. Newborn procedures you choose can be performed with your baby in your arms or right beside you. Your midwives handle any cleanup and even start your laundry before leaving.
Postpartum support includes phone check-ins and home visits at 24 and 72 hours, with additional office visits at two and six weeks. You maintain 24/7 access to your midwifery team for any urgent needs during recovery.
The Benefits of Homebirth
Comfort and Control in Your Own Environment
When you feel comfortable and in control of your surroundings, your body can work more naturally during labor. Homebirth allows you to move freely, change positions as needed and create an atmosphere that feels right for your family. You’re welcome to eat and drink as desired, play your favorite music and have complete autonomy over your birthing experience.
Personalized, Continuous Care
Unlike hospital settings, where staff changes occur throughout your labor, home birth with Twin Cities Midwifery provides continuity of care with the same midwives who have supported you throughout pregnancy. This familiar presence creates a sense of security and trust during one of life’s most transformative moments.
Family-Centered Experience
Home birth welcomes everyone you want to be present for your baby’s arrival. Partners can participate at whatever level feels comfortable, including the option to catch their baby. Siblings can be nearby, and your support network can surround you with love and encouragement if desired.
Immediate Bonding and Breastfeeding
Your baby remains with you from the moment of birth, fostering deep bonding and supporting natural breastfeeding initiation. There are no routine separations or unnecessary interruptions during those precious first hours together.
Safety Considerations for Homebirth
Careful Screening and Assessment
Home birth is appropriate for families with low-risk pregnancies. This includes those who are healthy, carrying one baby, with the baby in a head-down position when labor begins. Midwives carefully evaluate each family’s medical history and current pregnancy to ensure home birth remains a safe option.
Skilled, Experienced Care Teams
Each home birth is supported by at least two highly trained professionals certified in neonatal resuscitation and equipped with medical supplies to ensure safety and comfort. We monitor your well-being with tools like a doppler, blood pressure cuff, and thermometer, and provide professional-grade birth tubs, soothing herbs, and hands-on techniques like massage and position changes for your comfort. While we focus on healthy, natural births, we are prepared with supplies like IVs, urinary catheters, sutures, and medications for postpartum bleeding, including Pitocin, Methergine, Cytotec, TXA, or supportive herbs. These tools are used only if an indication is present, honoring your preferences while supporting safety at every stage. Our compassionate team ensures your birth is safe, supported, and personalized to your needs.
Emergency Preparedness
Midwives are trained to recognize when situations require additional medical intervention. They maintain clear transfer protocols and established relationships with local hospitals to ensure seamless care transitions if needed. Our midwives are certified in neonatal resuscitation and CPR and will have related equipment on hand. They will also bring medical supplies such as oxygen, suction for baby, medications for hemorrhage, a fetoscope and doppler to monitor baby’s heartbeat, a baby scale, equipment to check vitals (blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, thermometer, a watch), IV equipment, suture and lidocaine for perineal tears, a pulse oximeter, and a variety of herbal and homeopathic remedies.
