Pregnant Pauses – Feldenkrais for Pregnancy!

Have you ever heard of Feldenkrais? Honestly, most people haven’t. I was introduced to and fell in love with this modality of healing and body awareness through some amazing voice teachers I had in high school and college. At www.feldenkrais.com, you’ll find this description:

“The Feldenkrais Method is a form of somatic education that uses gentle movement and directed attention to improve movement and enhance human functioning. Through this Method, you can increase your ease and range of motion, improve your flexibility and coordination, and rediscover your innate capacity for graceful, efficient movement. These improvements will often generalize to enhance functioning in other aspects of your life.”

Essentially, it is very small movements, done very slowly, that vastly increases range of motion, decreases pain, and give you a whole new level of feeling grounded and in-tune with yourself. My Ithaca College voice teacher, Carol McAims, recently informed me of Pregnant Pauses (http://www.pregnantpauses.us/), a Feldenkrais program specifically designed for pregnancy. I love the idea of using Feldenkrais in this way. During pregnancy, women’s bodies go though so many incredible changes, their center of balance shifts, and their joint elasticity is affected by the hormone relaxin. Through the Feldenkrais Method, your body will learn how to move most efficiently and most easily, just by offering your body and neurological system many options to choose form through simple, tiny movements. It is truly transformative in a way that is much easier to experience than to put into words.

Check out the Pregnant Pauses website for excerpts to see what it is all about. If you try it, or have tried Feldenkrais in the past, I would love to hear about your experience. I haven’t tried Pregnant Pauses yet, but I would love your review of it if you do. Let me know if you think it would be a good addition to the Twin Cities Midwifery’s lending library.

Enjoy!
