Grief and Loss Support Resources

It can be difficult to know how to care for and support a friend, loved one, or even yourself through grieving a miscarriage or loss. Thankfully, there are a lot of support resources available in the Twin Cities, and below are a few that we found. If you see any that are missing please leave them in the comments.

This is a great list of Loss Support and Education groups across the Twin Cities that was compiled by Pregnancy and Postpartum Support Minnesota.

Children’s Hospitals has a Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support Group. They meet 2 times a month on Monday evenings. This group is free but registration is required. For questions and to register please contact the Bereavement Coordinator at 612-813-7216 or Nicole at 651-241-6206 or email bereavement@childrensMN.org. There is also a pregnancy after loss group that meets 2 Mondays a month, same contact info.

BeliEve Foundation is around to provide immediate and practical financial support to bereaved families in Minnesota . Complete their online application.  Started by a local grieving father, he just wants to help families stay “whole” after such a devastating loss.  Some people need help with funeral costs and others just need help reconnecting.  Believe Foundation considers gifts to any and all grieving parents in MN regardless of financial need.  They also support ongoing therapeutic needs as determined by each family’s situation.  Bonus:  The BeliEve Foundation gifts all of their families a stay at Faith’s Lodge.

PHA Wellness offers a Miscarriage Support Group (linked here for more information).

Here is a list of therapists, some of whom have additional training in supporting people experiencing pregnancy loss.

The Growing Through Loss series is offered twice a year by the Twin Cities’ North Suburban Grief Support Coalition and provides an opportunity for individuals to obtain information and support for a variety of loss and grief issues.

Edina Coalition for Grief Support focuses on education and group support in a safe and confidential environment for adults who are experiencing grief as a result of the death of a loved one.

Star Legacy Foundation is of Minnesota Center for Stillbirth and Infant Loss (MNCSID )offers support for miscarriage, stillbirth and infant loss. All services provided through MNCSID are free of charge. They provide resources like peer companions, online support groups, lists of funeral homes, access financial resources through grants and other foundations, educational resources, therapy referrals, photography, free brochures, etc. Anyone can refer a family to us; health professionals, family, or friends.

The Compassionate Friends (TCF). This is a national chapter-based organization that facilitates monthly support groups for bereaved parents and grandparents (no matter their child’s age at the time of death). Brighter Days Grief Center. This is a local organization that provides support services to anyone grieving the loss of a loved one. There are a variety of support groups and you will find great connections to help in the immediate and for the foreseeable future. Consider this right away – this is a group with great connections and access to a lot of different support options/providers.

Faith’s Lodge: A Place Where Hope Grows. In its North Woods setting, Faith’s Lodge provides a peaceful escape for families to refresh their minds and spirits while spending time with others who understand what they are experiencing.

Queer Birth Project offers a Queer Family Loss Group. You can find upcoming group dates and times on their Facebook page.

Halos of the St. Croix Valley provides emotional and financial support to bereaved parents who have lost a child from miscarriage through age 20 and reside in Minnesota or Wisconsin.

Missing GRACE Foundation: A local group that provides care packages, peer support, and monthly group meetings for those who are experiencing loss.

Return To Zero Hope provides compassionate and holistic support for people who have experienced a loss during their journey to parenthood.

Lindsey Henke is a psychotherapist, author, and speaker who specializes in the ups and downs on the journey to and through parenthood as well as the grief that often accompanies life transitions. She specialize in reproductive mental health and guide parents through the multifaceted terrain of infertility, perinatal loss, pregnancy after loss, and the delicate postpartum period.

Pregnancy After Loss Support (PALS) supports courageous people pregnant again after a loss through connection with peers, awareness in the community, education of providers, and advocacy around the world.

Empty Arms is a grief virtual support group for those who have expierenced pregnancy loss, stillbirth or miscarriage.

FamilyMeans Center for Grief & Loss offers specialized therapy for complicated grief, trauma and life transitions.

The Facebook group, A Bed For My Heart, is another community available for those looking for support or how to support someone suffering the loss of a miscarriage.

Grieve Out Loud and Faces of Loss, Faces of Hope – both Facebook groups.

Begun by a family who experienced the loss of their daughter Paige, Paige Bears offers comfort to people who experience the loss of a child, or for people going through extremely difficult situations and let’s them know they’re not alone.

Here are links to a couple of resources that may help someone put words to the sorrow they’re experiencing — an artistic dialogue that breaks the silence around miscarriage and the article “Five Lies You Were Told About Grief”.

Sufficient Grace out of Ohio offers online support groups.

Pregnancy and Postpartum Support MN is a good connection for local therapists who specialize in loss and postpartum.
